Profile Dokter

Theodore A. Wagner M.D.
Dr. Wagner graduated from the Temple University School of Medicine in 1968. He works in Seattle, WA and 2 other locations and specializes in Orthopedic Pediatric Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Wagner is affiliated with Harborview Medical Center, Seattle Childrens Hospital and University Of Washington Medical Center.

Theodore A. Wagner, M.D. is a clinical professor of orthopedics and sports medicine, specializing in spine surgery. Dr. Wagner is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington’s School of Medicine in Seattle. 

Dr. Wagner earned a bachelor's degree from Trinity College in Connecticut and his medical degree from Temple Medical School in Philadelphia. After an internship in surgery in Montreal, he came to the UW for a residency in orthopedic surgery. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Wagner's clinical interests include biological spine disk regeneration, scoliosis, spine traumas and spine degeneration.

Dr. Wagner believes spinal surgery is a very definitive type of surgery with somewhat predictive complications of occurrences. He believes in teaching his patients what he knows and what he doesn't know about their future before he does the index surgery.


Professor Wong Hee Kit
Chair, University Orthopaedics, Hand & Reconstructive Microsurgery Cluster Senior Consultant, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Professor Wong Hee Kit is the Chair of the University Orthopaedics, Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery Cluster, National University Health System; and Professor at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. He is also a Visiting Consultant to the Scoliosis Clinic at the Youth Health Service, Health Promotion Board, Singapore. He was the Head of the University Spine Centre from 1996 to 2015.

Prof Wong's practice is exclusively in the subspecialty of Spine Surgery, focusing on the management of degenerative, infective, metabolic, and neoplastic conditions of the spine. He has special interests in the surgical treatment of back pain, scoliosis and other forms of spinal deformity, with expertise in minimally invasive spine surgery as well as major reconstructive and revision spinal surgery. He is one of the pioneers of minimally invasive "keyhole" surgery for the treatment of juvenile and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

Prof Wong's research interests are in the area of spinal nerve injury and repair, tissue engineering and stem cell solutions for back pain, the epidemiology and genetic basis of, and growth modulation in idiopathic scoliosis. He is an active member of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery (ISASS), Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS), North American Spine Society (NASS), and the Asia Pacific Spine Society (APSS). He is currently the President of ISASS, and is a past President of APSS. He serves as a Board Member in the Pacific Asian Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and also chairs the Fellowship Committees in the SRS & ISSLS.  He peer reviews for the journal SPINE, the Journal of Spinal Deformity, the Asian Spine Journal, the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, and the Journal of Orthopaedic Science.

He is known for pioneering many new treatment methods, for eg the minimally invasive surgical technique of thoracoscopic anterior spinal fusion for scoliosis, which he later paired with instrumentation. He has also introduced and pioneered other treatment methods like posterior lumbar interbody fusion, transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion, minimally invasive anterior lumbar interbody fusion, vertebroplasty, articifical lumbar disc replacement and artificial cervical disc replacement. Today, Professor Wong is one of a handful of surgeons around the world who has honed the minimally invasive surgical technique to a fine art. His surgical case profile includes many complex spinal surgical procedures and minimally invasive spinal surgery.

 Out of the OT, Professor Wong is also a committed teacher and educator, someone who is constantly pushing for new levels of excellence in his chosen field. He is also dedicated to his specialty and is involved in multiple research projects to bring it to an even higher level.

In recognition for his contributions and his exemplary excellent work, he was awarded the "Master Clinician Award 2011" by the National University Health System, the “National Outstanding Clinician Award 2012" by the Ministry of Health, Singapore, and the Distinguished Senior Clinician Award 2016 by the Ministry of Health, Singapore.


Professor Dr Kwan Mun Keong
AM (Mal), MS Ortho (UM), MBBS (UM)

Prof. Kwan serves as the Chief of the Spine Surgery, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His practice is mainly devoted to spinal deformity surgery, i.e. scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, spinal tumor, infection and trauma.

Prof. Kwan did his medical degree MBBS in University of Malaya (UM) back in 1990 and graduated in 1995. Following that he did his internship/ rural service in Taiping Hospital for 3 years before joining University of Malaya (UM) in 1998 to pursue his Master of Orthopaedic Surgery (MS Orth) and graduated in 2002. Upon graduation, he was awarded ‘N. Subramaniam Award 2003’ by the Malaysia Orthopaedic Association (MOA) for being the best student in the MS Orth (UM) in 2002. He was also awarded the ‘Mahmood Merican Award 2002’ for acquiring the best research MS Orth thesis in the same year.

After his graduation, he further subspecialized and completed his training in the field of spinal surgery in University of Malaya and was later appointed as the Spinal Consultant and Chief of the Spine Unit in 2008. He has a vast experience in taking care and dealing with patients with spinal pathology where he operated an average of 300 cases a year with approximately 150 cases are on spinal deformity i.e. adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

Prof. Kwan is an active member of numerous international professional spine societies. Currently, he is the active member of the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) and also serves as the committee member in the IMAST (SRS) Committee. He is well known internationally as well as in the regional spine community where he serves as the Honorary Secretary of the Asia Pacific Spine Society (APSS).  Back in Malaysia, he is also very active and serves as the Treasurer for the Malaysia Spine Society (MSS). He is also an active member and past council member of the Malaysian Orthopaedic Association, College of Surgeon, Malaysia and AOSpine.

He was a recipient of many grants for research and is an active researcher in the field of spine, especially in the research area which is related to the safe use of pedicle screws in spinal surgery and scoliosis. He has published numerous articles in the International Scientific Peer Reviewed Journals. Recently, he was awarded a ‘P. Balasubramaniam Best Published Translational Medicine Paper Award 2014’ for the research paper on “The Safety and Strength of A Novel Medial, Partial Non‐Threaded Pedicle Screw: A Cadaveric and Biomechanical Investigation”. Due to his academic contribution, he was appointed to be a member of the editorial board for the Asian Spine Journal and Malaysian Orthopaedic Journal.

He has written many academic books and videos related to orthopaedic and spinal surgery and have also, contributed book chapters with regard to spinal disorders. Due to his dedicated teaching in both the medical students as well as master students, he was conferred the ‘Best Lecturer (Clinical) Award by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya in the year 2013’.

He has organized numerous international conferences i.e. IMAST KL 2015, AOSpine Asia Pacific Advance Conference 2012 and International MSS-SRS Conference 2011. He has also chaired many professional spinal surgery meetings worldwide and has been an invited speaker over 50 times besides presenting over 100 scientific abstracts/presentations.


Professor Dr Chris Chan Yin Wei
MS Ortho (UM), MD (Mal)

Professor Dr. Chris who moved from Kuching, Sarawak to practice in Kuala Lumpur in 2006 has been with the spine team since 2008. Prior to completion of his Orthopaedic training in 2008, he has served as a medical officer in orthopaedics for 4 years in Sarawak General Hospital followed by 2 years as an orthopaedic registrar in Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University Malaya.

In 2008, he graduated from Masters of Orthopaedic Surgery training in University Malaya at the top of the class and was awarded the N. Subramaniam award. At the same time, his research project on ‘safety in thoracic pedicle screw’ during his training, under the supervision of Prof Kwan Mun Keong won the Mahmood Merican award for top research project among all Masters of Orthopaedic trainee in 2008. The research project was subsequently published in 2 international journals, European Spine Journal and Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy.

He duely accepted the offer of a senior lecturer in orthopaedic surgery post in Faculty of Medicine University Malaya to pursue his ambition of becoming a spine surgeon. For 4 years he underwent sub-specialty training in spine surgery under Prof Kwan Mun Keong with the bulk of the training being in deformity correction, spinal tumour management as well as lumbar degenerative disorders. During his training he also spent 6 months in Kyung Hee University, Seoul, Korea to further understand problems related to sagittal imbalance and kyphosis. His research work during these six months was published in Asian Spine Journal recently.

He is now a consultant spine surgeon practicing in University Malaya Medical Centre as well as UM Specialist Centre under the spine team. His interest is mainly in deformity correction and has had experience in more than 500 cases of scoliosis correction.  He also has strong interest in research in areas such as safety of spine surgical techniques, methods of improving fusion in spine surgery as well as outcome studies in scoliosis surgery and minimally invasive spine surgery.


Dr Tony Setiobudi
Dr Tony Setiobudi is an orthopaedic surgeon practising at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore. He specialises in spine conditions, such as lower back pain, scoliosis, slipped disc, sciatica (numbness from lower back to legs), spinal stenosis (narrowing of spinal canal) and ankylosing spondylitis (inflammation of spinal joints). He performs major spine surgery, such as scoliosis correction, correction of a hunchback and spine tumour surgery.

Dr Tony completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia. He subsequently underwent advanced specialist training in orthopaedic surgery and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK in orthopaedic surgery.

Dr Tony received the Health Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) award from the Ministry of Health, Singapore to undergo further training in spine surgery. During his spine fellowship in Brisbane, Australia from 2011 – 2012, he was under the tutelage of renowned spine surgeons, such as surgeons included Dr Robert Labrum, Dr Geoff Askin, Dr Matthew Scott-Young and Dr Richard Williams. Dr Tony was also involved in teaching medical students at Queensland University as a clinical lecturer.

Dr Tony was formerly a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Alexandra Hospital, where he trained junior doctors in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He remains a visiting consultant spine surgeon at the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. He also has experience working at the National University Hospital (NUH), Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and the Kandang Kerbau (KK) Women's and Children's Hospital. He is currently a clinical senior lecturer at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Apart from clinical work and teaching, Dr Tony has a number of research publications in international journals. His research interests include spine tumour, spine fractures, lumbar disc degeneration, osteoporosis and hip fractures in the elderly. He has been invited to speak in medical and public forums locally and regionally to talk about spine health.
